FACILITATION OF HEALTH SCREENING AT JETTY

Panaji: August 09, 2025

Department of Fisheries has informed that in preparation for the lifting of the annual monsoon fishing ban, space was provided at the jetty to facilitate health screenings of individuals, particularly those arriving from out of state to work on fishing vessels. As a mandatory measure, only individuals issued with valid health cards after successful screening are allowed to board the fishing vessels.

The Primary Health Centre, Balli, has reported six individuals identified with symptoms of diarrhoea during a recent health screening. Prompt medical attention was immediately provided to the affected individuals, and necessary preventive measures has been implemented to prevent any further spread of the illness. This swift detection and response highlights the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts by the Department of Fisheries, the Health Department, Fishermen co-operative societies, and other key stakeholders, which continues to play a critical role in safeguarding the well-being of all stakeholders.

The Department of Fisheries has taken several precautionary measures to mitigate the risk of water-borne and vector-borne diseases. SOPs and posters has been disseminated to sensitize stakeholders on the importance of maintaining hygiene, safe disposal of waste, and consumption of clean drinking water. Officials posted at the Cutbona Jetty are actively engaging with Fishermen societies to educate their members on essential health precautions. To support hygiene practices, the sanitation infrastructure at the jetty has been strengthened. The newly constructed 50-seater toilet facility is now operational in addition to the existing toilets. Officials have been consistently emphasizing the use of these facilities.

Fishermen are advised to make use of the sanitation facilities and to remain vigilant for symptoms of illness. Regular cleanliness drives and fogging activities are being conducted at the jetty premises to control vector borne diseases and water borne diseases and maintain overall hygiene. All societies are cooperating with the authorities for maintaining cleanliness and promptly reporting any suspected cases of disease to the nearest health centre.

The Department of Fisheries reiterates its commitment to public health and collective efforts are essential to ensure a safe and healthy environment at the Cutbona Jetty.
