NARALI POORNIMA CELEBRATED

The Directorate of Fisheries celebrated Narali Poornima at Fisheries Jetty where coconuts were offered to the sea for blessings, in the distinguished presence of Shri Nilkanth Halarnkar, Minister for Fisheries; Shri Rohit Monserrate, Mayor, Corporation of the City of Panjim; and Shri Prasanna Acharya, IAS, Secretary (Fisheries).

Extending his greetings to the fishing community, Shri Halarnkar highlighted the ongoing efforts by both the Central and State Governments to boost fishing activities. “Our Government is committed to the welfare and development of fishermen and we continue to introduce new schemes for their benefit,” he said. He further stressed the importance of sustainability, stating, “Nature should be traditionally sustainable, and the Government is working towards this goal.”

The Minister informed that safety systems have been installed in approximately 650 fishing boats across the State. He reiterated that all government schemes and facilities must reach the intended beneficiaries and called for further strengthening of the fisheries industry.

The Department introduced the new welfare scheme, “Mukhel Mantri Nustekaar Mazat Yevjan”, designed for providing financial assistance in the form of family benefit to the households in case of the death of the active fishermen who is a breadwinner “irrespective of the cause of death”.

On the occasion the Department also released a Poster on Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for fishing vessel owners and crew, explaining the proper procedure for obtaining a fishing pass. Also a poster for publicity of Installation of ISRO-based Transponders on fishing vessels for fishermen safety and Coastal Security was released.

Also sanction orders were issued to beneficiaries under various schemes, including Financial assistance for purchasing motorcycles with ice boxes, Provision of three-wheelers with ice boxes, Upgradation of existing fishing vessels for export competency, Financial assistance for construction/purchase of FRP/Wooden fishing crafts, Eco-friendly moveable fish kiosks Matsya Vahini.

The event also marked the release of Goan Fish Trail – Volume 8, a publication by the Directorate of Fisheries showcasing government initiatives, infrastructure developments, and success stories from the fishing community.

The programme was attended by Dr. Shamila Monteiro, Director, Directorate of Fisheries; departmental officials; members of the fishing community; and other dignitaries.
