WORKSHOP ON DISSEMINATION OF GROUNDWATER DATA, GROUND WATER QUALITY RELATED ASPECTS HELD

A one-day workshop and stakeholder consultation meeting on ‘Dissemination of groundwater data, aquifer management plans and ground water quality related aspects’ was organised by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), SWR, Bangalore at the Water Resource Department (WRD) premises, Porvorim, today.
Secretary, WRD, Shri S. S. Gill, IAS, who was the Chief Guest for the inauguration said that groundwater is a scarce resource, comparable in importance with gold. Shri Gill highlighted the portable water crisis in other parts of the world and said that Goa, which is blessed with an abundance of water, needs to focus on its ground water conservation for future generations.
On the occasion, NAQUIM 2.0, an Aquifer Management Plan for Canacona-Goa, a report on groundwater quality in Goa and ground water year book of Goa (2024-2025) was released.
The Guest of Honour, Chief Engineer, WRD, Shri D. Y. Salelkar, said that managing ground water in Goa also implied teaching people to use water wisely and ensure water is conserved for the future.
Shri H.P Jayaprakash, Scientist D, CGWB, Bangalore, informed that the purpose of the workshop was to disseminate knowledge of the vast data on ground water that has been collected so that policies can be planned properly. Shi G. Krishnamurthy, Regional Director, CGWB, Bangalore, said that groundwater assessment for the entire country is being done and data obtained is being shared for States to act on it and make optimum utilisation of this important data and plan for groundwater management.
Present were Smt. Sangita P. Bhattacharjee, Sc-D, CGWB, Dr Sujeet Desai, Scientist, ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, among others.
