The Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) has organized a public lecture by Prof. Venki Ramakrishnan, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and one of the world’s most respected scientists on January 14, 2026 at the CSIR–National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Dona Paula, Goa, at 3:30 pm.

Prof. Venki Ramakrishnan was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his groundbreaking work on the structure and function of the ribosome, the molecular machine that synthesizes proteins in all living cells. His discoveries provided fundamental insights into how life operates at the molecular level and paved the way for advances in medicine, particularly in understanding antibiotics and genetic regulation.

Through this Lecture,” Venki Ramakrishnan will delve into one of humanity’s oldest and most profound mysteries “Why Do We Die?”. Drawing on cutting-edge scientific research, evolution, and biology, Prof. Ramakrishnan

will address the fundamental mechanisms of ageing and mortality—answering the biggest questions about life, longevity, and the limits of human existence. The lecture promises to be both intellectually rigorous and deeply accessible, appealing equally to students, researchers, educators, and the wider public.
