REPORT ON THE IPR SESSION AT GOVERNMENT COLLEGE, SANKHALI

The Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of Government College of Arts, Science, and Commerce, Sankhali, in association with the Goa State Innovation Council, successfully organized an an insightful session on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). The event was aimed at enhancing student’s understanding of IPR and its critical role in fostering innovation, protecting creative ideas, and encouraging entrepreneurship.
The session was conducted by Mr. Pranay Prabhu Gaonkar, an expert in patents and trademarks, who brought valuable insights into the significance of IPR in today’s competitive world. He began the session by explaining the need for innovation. This remained the point of focus in the entire session. He also talked on the fundamentals of IPR, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and how these rights play a crucial role in safeguarding original ideas and innovations.
Mr. Gaonkar focused on entrepreneurship as both a necessity and a mindset, stressing the importance of creativity and problem-solving in business ventures. He gave several examples where he showed how simple innovations can be very rewarding. He also showed some innovations done by some high school students. He highlighted that in the modern world, intellectual property is one of the most valuable assets for an individual or an organization. The session provided practical insights into how entrepreneurs can protect their ideas and innovations to avoid infringement and gain a competitive edge.
Though engaging examples and real-life case studies, the resource person explained how intellectual property has helped businesses grow and sustain themselves in competitive markets. He also discussed, in brief, the process of obtaining patents and copyrights in India and the costs involved. The session encouraged students to think creatively and consider entrepreneurship as a viable career path.
The session was highly interactive, with the resource person encouraging the students in participating in discussions. Mr. Pranay has offered his whole hearted support to the students interested in entrepreneurship and in translating their ideas into sustainable business ventures.
This was followed by concluding remarks by the Principal, Prof. Namdev Gawas, who reiterated the importance of intellectual property rights in academic research and entrepreneurship. He strongly encouraged students to embrace innovation and explore opportunities for startups while their ideas and inventions are legally protected. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr Dattaraj Jawdekar.
With such initiatives, Government College of Arts, Science, and Commerce, Sankhali, continues to play an active role in building an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship, ensuring that students are well-equipped for the challenges of the modern business world.
