SOCIETY SHOULD TREAT GIRL CHILD WITH EQUALITY: GITTE

Parents have to support girl child with regards to her all-round development without any discrimination and society have to aspire to treat girl child with equality stated District Magistrate and Collector, North Goa, Dr. Sneha Gitte IAS who was speaking as a chief guest at a function organized to celebrate International Girl Child Day -2023. The theme of the celebration was Invest in Girls Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well Being.

The function was organized by the State Family Welfare Bureau, Directorate of Health Services in the city today.

Dr. Gitte highlighting the importance of celebration of the International Girl Child Day said it aims to provide attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. Therefore it’s an important occasion which intends to recognise girl’s rights and the unique challenges girls faces around the world, she added.

Dr. Geete further said there was a time where girls were discriminated in our early society. With the change of thought and enforcement of the law of equality, the scenario has changed. But today, the challenges are different – girls are discriminated against in different forms which we have to overcome. We have to ensure their safety, parents have to support girls and society has to create an environment of equality and respect for girl child in the society.

The Chief Medical Officer Dr. Uttam Desai in his address enlightened the participants about various activities conducted under PC-PNDT and Beti Bachao Beti Padhav wherein sensitization programme were conducted for the staff of Sub Registrar and appeal letters with Save Girl Child message to be given to couples at the time of marriage registration. Other areas where sensitization programmes were conducted are Vidhya Prabodhini College of Commerce, Education, Computer and Management Porvorim, Kare College of Law & Salgaonkar College of Law, Skit competition for Higher Secondary students, ITI students and for Government employees. Apart from this inter Health center dance competition, cloth bag designing, Greeting card on BBBP on womens day for Government employees, Akash Kandil contest, Felicitation of staff who are blessed with baby girl, Poetry competition Virtual Cyclothon are other activities were conducted to sensitize masses about Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign.

Psychologist, Professional Trainer Smt. Ketaki Parab delivering the keynote address said we have to empower our girl educationally, physically and emotionally. She advised women to do away with discrimination where both should be treated equally and went on to suggest to say – Wow! A Girl child is born on the birth of one.

Deputy Director, Dr. Rupa Naik earlier welcomed the guests and later on presented a memento to the Chief Guest Dr. Sneha Gitte, Medical Officer Dr Pritam Naik, students of Nursing Institute, staff of DHS, State Family Welfare Bureau and others attended the function.

Ms. Shraddha Naik compered the function. The programme was followed by a cultural programme where Ms Manjushree Mate and her team members performed Bharat Natyam dance.
