Betul Fortress on the mouth of Sal River in Quepem Taluka was built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the legendary Maratha ruler, to keep a watch on Portuguese activity in the river.
This fort was built in the year 1679 thus making it the last one to be built by Shivaji Maharaj in his lifetime as well as the only fort built by him in Goa.
Today only one bastion of this fort has survived ravages of time but understanding its historical importance, tribute to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be paid.
To create awareness about the relevance of Shivaji Maharaj and his association with Goa, the Directorate of Archaeology will be exhibiting an one day exhibition of old documents on this subject. The exhibition will be open for all till 5:00 pm on June 6, 2022.
