 President of India Shri. Ram Nath Kovind attended the 30th Annual Convocation Ceremony of Goa University at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Bambolim today. Governor of Goa and Chancellor of Goa University Dr. Smt. Mridula Sinha, First Lady Smt. Savita Kovind, Chief Minister Shri. Manohar Parrikar, Vice Chancellor Prof. Varun Sahani and Registrar Dr. Y.V. Reddy were present on the occasion.

In his Convocation address, President Shri. Kovind congratulated the students and said that this success is a result of their efforts and a tribute to the hard work and sacrifices of the professors, parents and their family members.

The President acknowledged the tenacity and academic outcome of girl students and said that the result is a game changer for the society and Goa’s promotion of girl’s education is a model for rest of the states in the country. “Access to Higher Education is still a privilege in India and it is due to the contribution of countless citizens, educational Institutions are sustained. As you go into the world, try to give back to the society in whatever manner you can or wish to,” the President said.

“Higher education is being made inclusive and expansive by the Government and other stakeholders. Hence, expanding quantity has to be complemented by quality. Emphasis on self-mobilisation is the need of an hour. A focused partnership between institutes and industry is necessary. A culture of entrepreneurship must be also promoted between students and researchers,” the President opined.

President Shri. Kovind appreciated the University for having Departments like the Department of Portuguese and Lusophone study and Department of Marine Science. “Goa University has made a mark with its liberal and cosmopolitan character, in keeping with the ethos of the state. This is a major strength and it should not get diluted,” the president stated.  

While addressing the gathering, Chancellor of Goa University Dr. Smt. Mridula Sinha stated the degrees earned by the students is a feather in the cap of the state of Goa. “The hard work by today’s youth will ensure a ‘new India’ of tomorrow. Goa has done substantial progress in the field of Higher Education in past few years. However, we must also encourage our youth towards research in order to yield new inventions,” the Governor said.

The Governor advised the students to keep their moral high, believe in themselves and inculcate good values within themselves. The Governor also congratulated Goa University for setting up ‘pre-marital counseling center.’  “Along with bookish education, students must perceive social awareness. They must be sensitive and take an active part in the development of the society,” the Governor said. 

Earlier, the program began with Convocation Procession followed by the singing of National Anthem. Prof. Sahani gave the welcome address. V.M.Salgaonkar College of Hospitality, Raia won ‘Swachhtam Mahavidyalaya Samman’ award for Cleanest College in the State. The guests have presented mementos. The Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor later conferred Ph.D, Degrees and Diplomas to students. The convocation dissolved by singing the National Anthem.

Secretary for Finance Shri. Daulat Hawaldar IAS, Secretary for Education Smt. Nila Mohanan IAS, senior Government Officials, Deans, Principals, Teachers, Parents and students attended the function in large numbers.
