The State Family Welfare Bureau (SFWB), Director of Health Services, Panaji organized a one day training programme on Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT )(Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act 1994 and Rules 1996 in the City recently.

The training was mainly for  officials of Judiciary, Prosecution, Appropriate Authorities and Nodal Officers  under PC-PNDT Act  to address the issue of gender bias sex selection, address structural inequalities and patriarchy, in an attempt to improve position of women and girls and further to intensify the implementation of PC-PNDT Act.

Secretary Health, Smt. Nila Mohanan, IAS underscoring the need to arrest the discrimination of the girl child felt that it is national concern and the national obligation to safeguard every girl child for better future In Goa, we don’t have discrimination for female child.  Cases are reported from across the borders, she added and urged to be alert to stop it.

          Speaking further she stressed the need to create more positive communication, discussion among society for welfare of girl child or women.  Just enforcing the law ain’t enough, she pointed.

Smt. Mohanan said “sex discrimination is just not about the sex ratio but it is also about opportunities provided to every girl child or women to excel in whatever they choose to be part of and to achieve their target”.  The topic should be kept alive in public with constant interaction by organizing different activities, such as Letter of Appreciation and felicitation of every parent of new born girl child to make them understand that it’s a matter of pride to become the parents of girl child, she remarked.

District Collector(North), Smt. R. Menaka –IAS; Director of Health Services, Dr. Jose D’Sa and Chief Medical Officer,  SFWB, Health Department Dr. Vandana Dhume were among those present on the occasion.

Smt. Anuja Gulathi guided the gathering on the socio cultural and jurisprudential foundation of PC-PNDT Act and Role of Appropriate authorities and Justice Shalini Phasalkar Joshi gave a insight to the Trial process under PCPNDT Act, appreciation of evidence and conflation between PC-PNDT& MTP Act.

         Legal Assistant for PC-PNDT cell, DHS Smt. Pallavi Kakodkar compered the function and proposed the vote of thanks.
