Sports is considered as integral to all round development of onces personality and therefore the Government encourages all forms of sports like football, cricket, badminton, tennis and various other disciplines in the state, said Chief Minister         Dr. Pramod Sawant. He was speaking as the Chief Guest at the prize distribution function organized by the Goa Badminton Association at Sports complex Peddem ,Mapusa on Thursday.

         Speaking further, Dr. Sawant said that the State has formulated its own Sports Policy to uphold the interest of sportspersons in the state. Many sports persons have excelled in sports after availing the scheme of the Government. He congratulated the winners and advised the youth who are into sports to strive hard with firm dedication, commitment to attain success.

The Goa Badminton Association organized a three day ‘Yonex Sunrise West-Zone Interstate Championship-2019, at Sports Complex Peddem Mapusa. The West-Zone comprising of five states namely host state Goa, and rest of the states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh participated in the tournament.

          The events were played in Senior and Junior categories. In this tournament the state of Maharashtra emerged as champion by winning gold medals in both categories. In Junior category, Gujarat won silver medal and bronze medal was shared by Goa and Madhya Pradesh. In the senior category Madhya Pradesh secured second position to win silver medal, while the bronze medal was shared by Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat. The winners were given prizes at the hands of the Chief Minister.

         Team Managers and Coaches were honoured at the hands of Chief Minister. MLA Mapusa, Shri Joshua D’Souza, Leader of Opposition Shri Digambar Kamat, Executive Director, Sports Authority of Goa, Shri V.M. Prabhudesai,  were among those who attended the function.  

Earlier, Shri Narahar Thakur, President GBA welcomed the gathering.

Shri Pradosh Silim Khan compered the function while Shri Sarfaraj Shaikh Secretary GBA, proposed the vote of thanks.

          Earlier, the Chief Minister attended the prize distribution function at Duler Football Stadium organized by the Goa Police and presented prizes to FC Goa, the winners of the 16th Edition of Goa Police Football Tournament who emerged victorious by defeating Sporting Clube De Goa in a tie breaker 7-6.
