PARA CHAMPIONS FELICITATED

Para champions who have excelled in various sporting events were felicitated at a function at the Manohar Parrikar Memorial Hall, Sanjay School, in Porvorim, today.

Minister for Social Welfare, Shri Subhash Phaldessai, who was the Chief Guest for the function, told the para champions that they had made Goa proud. “We feel proud of you,” he said, adding that results do not matter, and what does is participating because it teaches us so much. “They say that destiny is written on our foreheads or on the palms of our hands, but destiny is about hard work because there are some champions here who have won medals without hands,” he said.

Shri Phaldessai said, “My ministry is committed to helping you all and minimizing your problems. Disability is an ability where we can become more productive and show output in our strong areas. You have enormous potential, capability and ability. You just need to have confidence in your selves,” Shri Phaldessai told the gathering.

Shri Phaldessai further said that there was a need to identify persons with disabilities in rural areas. “Many parents don’t come forward to register their child. We have to get rid of this inferiority complex. We all are equal,” he said.

Earlier, the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and Social Welfare had organised various awareness and sensitization program for employees of Kadamba Transport Corporation. MLA and Chairperson of Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL), Shri Ulhas Tuenkar, said that persons with disabilities face a lot of problems while travelling and such awareness and sensitization programs help address these issues. He further assured to look into allotting stalls at bus stands for differently able persons.

State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Shri Guruprasad Pawaskar, said that the Commission was working towards ensuring persons with differently able persons are provided facilities for a better living.

Present on the occasion were Secretary, Social Welfare, Shri Arun Kumar Mishra, IAS, Deputy Director (Admin) in charge of Special Cell for Empowerment of PwDs Social Welfare, Shri Taha Haziq, General Manager, KTCL, Shri Sanjay Ghate, Member of State Disability Advisory Board, Shri Prakash Kamat, President of Disability Rights Association of Goa, Shri Avelino D’Sa, former Commissioner for PwDs, Smt Anuradha Joshi, Secretary Paralympic Association, Shri Sudesh Thakur, were among those present on the occasion.
