WORLD WETLAND DAY CELEBRATED

Goa State Wetland Authority with the support of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Department of Environment, Goa and Goa State Biodiversity Board celebrated the World Wetlands Day 2020 recently.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Goa Shri Subhash Chandra, IFS, inaugurated the function in the presence of Asst. PCCF Shri Santosh Kumar, Director (Environment) Shri Johnson Bedy Fernandes, Sr. Scientist CSIR-NIO- Dr Sanil Kumar, Member Secretary GSBB, Dr Pradip Sarmokadam, and resource person Dr Pramod Salaskar.

Dr Pradip Sarmokadam welcomed the guests. The brochure was unveiled by the dignitaries on the dais followed by awarding Wetland Mitra cards to the very first three wetland Mitra’s for Bondvol Lake.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sanil Kumar assured support from NIO and his technical team for consulting the local communities during the preparation of brief document and identification of Wetlands in the State of Goa. Shri Santosh Kumar informed about the initiatives taken by the forest department in the area under his jurisdiction and also about protection and conservation of the environment, Jal Shakti Abhiyan and other schemes available with the Department of Forest.

Shri Subhash Chandra in his speech emphasized on the importance of wetland with regard to its ecology, society, historic perspective and the spiritual connect imbibed in the moral values of the local people.

Resource person for the occasion Dr Pramod (Eminent Limnologist and Environment Activist – Powai, Mumbai) delivered a lecture on reclamation of Pawai Lake, Mumbai,  followed  by  presentation  of  a case study on  ‘Bondvol Lake by Bondvol Mitra Mrs Ela Fernandes and BMC Chairperson of Calapor, Mr Arturo D’Souza. They with the help of a presentation explained in details the importance of the Bondvol Lake to the villagers of Calapor from its ecological and economic perspective. An interactive session was held for the resource person and the audience.

Dr Mandar Nanjkar, Scientist, CSIR.NIO. gave an update on the status of ongoing Wetland identification project. The technical session was followed by a talk by Shri Mahesh Shilkar on a success story of restoration of a water body from Verem, Vangurla. The celebration concluded with a Vote of Thanks from Dr Shailesh Morajkar, the function was compered by Mr Subhash Jan.
