GOVERNOR EXTENDS GREETINGS ON THE

OCCASION OF DUSSEHRA

Panaji: October 17, 2018

Asvina 25, 1940

The Governor of Goa, Dr. (Smt) Mridula Sinha has extended warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Goa on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra on October 18, 2018.

In her message, the Governor has said that, India is known for its culture and many festivals. Although the country celebrates different types of festivals throughout the year, Dussehra is one of the most important ones among them all. The word Dussehra is derived from 'dasha' and 'hara' , two Sanskrit words that mean defeating the ten or remover of the bad fate. The festival also marks the end of nine-day long Navratri festival, during which the nine forms of goddess Durga are worshipped. The day is celebrated to commemorate victory of lord Rama over evil Ravana. Navratri is replete with symbolism about vanquishing evil and wanton nature, and about having reverence for all aspects of life and even for the things and objects that contribute to our wellbeing. Dussehra is a unique festival celebrated in our country with great enthusiasm, gaiety and spiritual fervor. It symbolizes the victory of good over the evil. At a time like now when human society is afflicted with myriad evils like violence, hatred, selfishness, indiscipline etc., it s vital that we celebrate this occasion with greater sense of co-operation and warmth in order to preserve and promote the virtues of universal brotherhood, peace, mutual understanding and unity. True happiness and prosperity of human beings cannot be achieved through economic means only. Adherence to spiritual values and human virtues is essential for enduring peace, prosperity and happiness in the society. Let us therefore rededicate ourselves in promoting the virtues of love, mercy, patience and compassion in our society which is the essence of this festival, she added.

The Governor, Smt. Sinha has further said the celebrations of Dussehra will bring greater joy, prosperity and peace to everyone.
