Cyber Crime Cell bursts Face book fraud

Cyber Cell apprehended one Swapnil Naik in Cr. No. 16/2020 for defrauding one victim of Rs. 23 lakh by creating a fake facebook profiling and impersonating as a woman interested in marrying him.  Accused was arrested in Devangere district in Karnataka by a team led by PI Vishwesh Karpe and PSI Devendra Pingle.




On October 22, 2020, a case of online fraud vide Cr. No. 16/2020 was registered at Cyber Crime P.S. case upon complaint of Mr. Vishnu Gaude r/o Ponda-Goa that from 27/06/2020 to 16/09/2020, one unknown user of Facebook on the pretext of marrying the complainant fraudulently deceived the complainant to transfer a total amount of Rs. 23,21,068/- .

Immediately investigation was taken up by Cyber Cell and all bank accounts, phones and online profiles linked to the accused were analyzed. Accordingly, discreet technical surveillance was mounted at Goa and accused was located hiding in Davangere, Karnataka where with the help of Karnataka Police, Cyber Cell took the accused into custody. During the course of investigation, the accused tried to move across different towns – Sangli, Bangalore and Davangere, however he was tracked down relentlessly and apprehended.



Upon interrogation by the Cyber Crime accused revealed that he used to pose as female on social media application and trap innocent persons for financial gains. He would present a sorry figure of himself and convince the victims to transfer money to him. He would also blackmail his victims, once they shared their personal details with the accused and then trap them further. Further investigation is on to identify the victims and other persons involved in this network.




Accused persons – Swapnil Naik was habitual and was previously arrested twice by Curchorem Police station in Fraud & Cheating case. He is a school dropout and has been cheating persons since he was a minor in age.
