BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION AWARDS 2020 ANNOUNCED

Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) announced the Government of Goa’s “Goa State Biodiversity Conservation Awards for the Year 2020” in appreciation of exemplary contribution in the field of conservation of biodiversity, ecology and environment. The awards are conferred  in two categories namely Awards for best Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC), one each from North & South Goa, with a prize amount of Rs. 50,000/-, and in  the individual Category with prize amount of Rs. 25,000/-, for one individual  each from North and South Goa. In addition special appreciation prizes are given to 4 BMCs with a prize amount of            Rs.10,000/- each, and 4 individuals with a prize amount of      Rs. 5000/- each.  The following is the list of awardees:

 

In the Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) Category (prize amount of Rs.50,000/- each) the Agarwada Chopdem BMC from North Goa. This award is conferred for efforts taken by BMC in making Peoples Biodiversity Register of their village, efforts for identifying potential Biodiversity Heritage Site in village, contribution of BMC team members and enthusiastic present Chairperson Shri. Sitaram P. Raut and past BMC Chairperson   Smt. Suman Sitaram Khorjuvekar in recognizing the local biodiversity knowledge holders, stakeholders and experts.

 

  BMC has worked zealously at the ground level with efforts to conserve and revive traditional occupations, including conservation program taken to conserve the real diamond of Agarwada Chopdem – ‘The Saltpans’ and helping local farmers in developing local tagging and branding of biodiversity which is appreciable and will lead to livelihood support to local farmers. Special appreciation is extended to BMC for the exemplary service and full cooperation in providing food, groceries, vegetables and masks to the needy persons, during the COVID- 19 pandemic. 

 

Shristhal BMC has bagged the award from South Goa. This award is conferred for efforts taken by BMC in making Peoples Biodiversity Register of the village, efforts for declaring Biodiversity Heritage Site – ‘Ghodyapaik- Gulem’ in the village, contribution of the BMC team members and enthusiastic Chairperson Shri. Vinak Tubki in recognizing the local biodiversity knowledge holders, stakeholders and experts.

 

 BMC has worked zealously at the ground level with efforts to revive traditional occupations. Special appreciation was given to BMC, for doing exemplary service and extending full cooperation in doing door to door survey and for distribution of food to all the needy persons specially the stranded migrants in Canacona Taluka, during COVID- 19 pandemic by Mamlatdar of Canacona Taluka. 

 

Special Appreciation (BMC Category)  prize amount of            Rs. 10,000/- each has been awarded to  Anjuna Caisua BMC for their Involvement in conservation activities and tree plantation activities. Chodan Madel BMC for their local vigilance wherein violation was captured and participation at GSBB programs and involvement. Curti Khandepar BMC for their innovative of Springs  and water bodies rejuvenation as part of PBR derived focus.

 

Chicalim BMC also received the award in the category for their efforts taken to control overexploitation of clams. Corporation of City of Panaji BMC has been awarded special appreciation from GSBB for being first Municipal area BMC to do City Biodiversity Index and PBR derived conservation Focus approach

In the individual category (prize amount of Rs.25,000/-)  Shri. Suryakant Gaonkar (North Goa) received award for his involvement in biodiversity conservation activities, excellent biodiversity documentation. Produced natural colours and is educating and advocating its use during holi instead of chemical colours.

 

Shri. Janu Gaonkar (South Goa) received the award in the category. He is a  Traditional Medicinal Practitioner with vast experience and selfless service in his tribal village and adjoining villages, Excellent traditional knowledge of flora and fauna. He has knowledge of gynecologic ailments of women  and has helped in difficult childbirth in very inaccessible and remote tribal areas of Khotigao, Canacona. He also has knowledge of ailments  of animals and their cures. 

 

Special appreciation (individuals)- prize amount of Rs. 5,000/- each, for their contribution in the field of Environment, Biodiversity or its  traditional knowledge have been awarded to Shri. Ankush Uttam Bagli, Agarwado, Pernem, Shri. Agnel Fernandes, Nerul, Bardez; Shri. Shirish Gopalkrishna Pai, Shristhal Canacona, Shri. Omkar Dharwadkar, Ponda.

 

Special appreciation to BMC Secretaries prize of Rs. 5000/- each awarded have been awarded to Shri. Sandeep Desai (Shristhal BMC), Shri. Vinod Shinde (Barcem Quedem BMC), Shri. Gokuldas Kudalkar (Curti- KhndeparBMC), Shri.Ravindra Wadikar (Xeldem BMC), Smt. Asha Mesta (Chicolna Bogmalo BMC), Shri. Alvito D' Silva (Pomburpa Olaulim BMC), Shri. Ganpat Sidhaye (PDF BMC), Shri. Sushant Naik (Tivrem Orgao BMC), Shri. Prajanan Naik (Surla BMC), Shri. Mukund Ukshekar (Warkhand Nagzar BMC), Shri. Sanjit Rodrigues (CCP BMC) and Shri. Lancy Dias (Curca Bambolim).

Special recognition (certificates only) for contribution in the field of Biodiversity have been awarded to Sadashiv Datta  (Chapora), Adv. Prakash Mahadev Govekar Narverker (Chopdem)  Sahil Vijay Warang ( Camurlim, Bardez), Govind Bhobe, (Nerul), Ashay (Ashu) Abhay Korde (Borim), Sandeep N.S. Parker (Khandepar), Damodar Vasant Chari (Shristhal), Fr. BolmaxPereira (Chicalim) and Sadhanand Gawde (Priol).
