Youngest Goan To Be Awarded With The Prestigious Award

The School Has Received Two National Awards Conferred By Govt. Of India Under Her Able Guidance

Mrs. Sindhu Prabhu Desai Nayak, Headmistress of Govt. High School, Malkarnem, Quepem has been selected for the “National Award for Teachers 2020” for her remarkable contribution in the field of education. The award certificate and silver medal will be presented at the hands of District Collector South, IAS, Shri Ajit Roy on September 5, 2020. Due to pandemic situation the award function will be held through a webinar using the NIC platform. The president of India, Shri Ramnath Kovind will address the function through video conferencing.  The Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education organised this national level function on Teachers Day to confer the National Award to the Best Teacher of the country. This year all together 47 teachers have been selected from the country for this award.

Mrs. Sindhu Prabhu Desai is the youngest recipient of this Prestigious Award from Goa. Mrs. Prabhu Dessai has an excellent academic record. She has done her Masters in Chemistry with Bachelors in Education. She is a Gold Medalist in Chemistry from Goa University. She has around fourteen years of experience in the field of Education. She has taught in some of the renowned colleges of Goa like St. Xavier’s College, Dhempe College and Govt. College Quepem. She has worked as senior subject matter expert in chemistry and an English reviewer in Pearson Education Limited, a multinational Educational Software Company in Bangalore.


She topped Goa Public Service Commission Examination conducted by Govt. of Goa and was appointed as lecturer in Chemistry in Govt. Higher Secondary Sanguem. Out of six years in the higher secondary, she was felicitated for three academic years for obtaining 100% result in chemistry. She has done extensive research in the field of Education and has been the resource person in the subjects like, “career guidance”, “Women Empowerment” and “Leadership”. She was promoted as the headmistress of Govt. High School Malkarnem in 2016.


“A leader is one who knows the way, shows the way and goes the way”, Mrs. Sindhu has transformed the school remarkably. The confidence level of the students of this remote area has been enhanced tremendously. Students have excelled in academics, sports and co-curricular activities. Most of the students who are first generation learners, have won State level and national level prizes in the recent years.  She has improved the infrastructure of the school, set up a digital library, herbal garden, kitchen garden and customised compost unit in the school. Graffitti has been introduced in the school to create “learning walls”, Special emphasis is given on menstrual hygiene, personal hygiene and sanitation of the students. She has effectively ventured into e-administration.  The school has also proposed and has been practising the New Educational Model during Lockdown, the key points of which are being taken by NCERT. In less than five years as the headmistress of the school, Sindhu Prabhu Dessai has won two National Awards for the school, conferred by Govt. of India. She has been felicitated by various dignitaries like honourable Ex -Governor, Smt. Mridula Sinha, honourable Ex-MP of South Goa, Shri Narendar Sawaikar, Rajya Sabha, MP Shri Vinay Tendulkar, Minister for Power, Shri Nilesh Cabral, Taluka Level Steering Committee, Quepem, Goa Mahila Shakti Abhiyaan and Directorate of Education, Goa. Her journey as a school leader was highlighted on the official facebook page of Honourable Ex-CM of Goa Shri ManoharParrikar.


National Awardee Headmistress, Sindhu Prabhu Desai is also the recipient of National Award conferred by “Shikshak Vikas Parishad”. She has also been awarded by the JCI for the remarkable contribution in Education on Women’s Day 2020.

The case study of the Headmistress as an educational leader was selected to be presented at the first National Conference on Leadership Pathways for School Improvement, held in New Delhi in January 2019. The conference was organised by NCSL – NIEPA, a branch of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. She was privileged to be one among the 48 leaders, selected all over India. She represented the State of Goa and Govt. High School Malkanem and the school has been declared as the “Centre of School Excellence”. She was the only head of Government School in Goa selected to present her case study for the State conference organised by Goa Headmaster’s Association in collaboration with NIEPA, New Delhi and Goa Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan in 2019.

Her research paper on “Role of leader in transforming the school” was selected to be presented for the National Conference organised by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training), New Delhi in 2020. She has also participated and presented in myriad State and National Seminars and Symposiums.

She is a good orator and writer. She has written several articles in local newspapers. She has also developed chemistry curriculum for Karnataka and Gujarat State Boards, CBSE and ICSE boards. She has carried out extensive research on audio visual aids in chemistry.


The headmistress, Smt Prabhu Dessai has expressed, “I am elated to receive the National Award. It is an overwhelming experience for me. I am glad that my dedicated efforts as a team leader have won nationwide acclaim.” She also said that, “I dedicate this award to the people of Malkarnem Village which includes parents, students; SMC members and the entire squad of Govt. High School Malkarnem for their co-operation and collective efforts in making the planned strategies successful in uplifting the school.”
